Great Pyramid Race draws 7000 spectators
A BUMPER crowd, good weather and a jump in contestants was enough to ensure this year’s Woolworths’ Great Pyramid Race was a mighty success.

The annual event, held in Gordonvale, was estimated to have drawn up to 7000 people on the day, to witness the runners take on the 12km race to the 922m high peak of Walsh’s Pyramid and back or to enjoy the markets and atmosphere of the event.
This year’s men’s race winners were led in by Billy Curtis, with a time of 01:23:26, Joshua Chugg, second with 01:25:59 and Matthew Romano with 01:30:07. The women’s race was won by Rebecca Gibbs with a time of 01:47:13, second was Ella Appleby (daughter of local runner Anita Appleby who has held the women’s record since 1997) with a time of 01:48:12 and Rebecca Elliott at 01:54:20.
The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair Association president Renee Edwards said it had been a big day with big crowds, compared with the past couple of years.

“All of our smaller races were up in numbers, so many family members, friends and supporters came along,” she said. The highlight for her was the satisfaction of seeing the day work well with no major incidents, the community atmosphere and “seeing the faces of the winners coming in”. The Great Pyramid Race has been running since 1959 and combines endurance racing and a community market at Norman Park. Races include the Great Pyramid Race, the Half Pyramid race, race to the base, 3km race, 1800m juniors race and the charity fun run.
