Gothic show hits the spot
THE Cairns Choral Society has opened its eight-show season of ‘The Addams Family’ musical to packed houses, with every performance selling out fast since opening night on Friday, July 25.

Director Claire Mackenzie said the enthusiastic audience response had been overwhelming.
“Any tickets that become available are snapped up,” she said.
“This is the fruition of a decade of dreaming and it has been a labour of love to help bring this marvellous tale to life.”
The production, based on characters created by Charles Addams and featuring music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, reimagines the iconic gothic family with a mix of humour, heart and musical flair.
Although an experienced director, Ms Mackenzie is making her debut with the Cairns Choral Society.
“What a way to make a debut to capacity crowds each performance,” she said.
The musical follows Wednesday Addams, now 18, as she falls for a “normal” boy from Ohio and chaos ensues when the Addams family invite his straight-laced family over for dinner.
Themes of love, change and family take centre stage, with a macabre twist.
Standout performances come from Stephen Bigby as Gomez and Lauren Long as Morticia, with a strong local cast bringing the spooky household to life.
The production adds another success to the Cairns Choral Society’s century-long history.
After celebrating its 100th year in 2023, the society continues to produce major local theatre, including next year’s season of ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.
The society welcomes new members over the age of 14, whether on stage or behind the scenes.
