The 2025 event generated an estimated $3.65m in economic impact for the Cairns region and attracted more than 4180 athletes, supporters and visitors. Organisers are now setting their sights on surpassing $4 million in economic impact in 2027.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden has launched the 2027 games alongside games ambassador Mark Knowles, encouraging athletes to secure their place and experience one of Australia’s premier masters sporting events.

“The Great Barrier Reef Masters Games showcase everything that sets Cairns apart; internationally recognised sporting facilities, world-class natural attractions and a vibrant dining, arts and cultural scene,” she said.

“The competition is only part of the now. It’s what people can experience here between events that makes Cairns such a compelling host city.

“Every successful games strengthens Cairns’ reputation as a host city. We want to be the city athletes look forward to competing in and organisers have confidence in choosing.”

Mr Knowles, a decorated hockey player and an Olympic gold medallist, said the games were about so much more than a competition.

“This event is an exciting opportunity for people to reconnect with sport, challenge themselves and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with competing alongside like-minded people,” he said.

“There’s always something rewarding about being part of the Games experience, whether you’re a lifelong athlete, returning to competition, or taking part in a masters event for the first time.

“Having the opportunity to compete in a destination like Cairns makes it even more special and I’d encourage people to register early and start planning their trip.”

Since launching in 2013, the biennial event has become one of Australia’s premier masters sporting events, attracting competitors from across Australia and overseas for five days of sport in the tropics.

Member for Barron River Bree James said the games would be a prime opportunity to showcase Tropical North Queensland.

Participants can compete across a wide range of sports while enjoying the region’s tropical lifestyle experiences.
