From a blank page to a book
OVER a number of years, the ‘Goss’ has featured many of the super talented people that reside in the Douglas Shire and beyond.

It always gives me great pleasure to showcase the many skills that exist in this beautiful corner of the country.
Having a special talent does not always guarantee success, however, as sometimes simply getting your name out there is difficult to achieve
This is very much the case for budding authors who often struggle to have the right connections or can’t afford to pursue their dream of seeing their work in print.
The upcoming ‘Publishing on a Shoestring Workshop’ in Mossman is designed to provide a path to publishing for local authors and help make that dream come true.
Emerging writers are invited to a practical five-hour workshop that proves you don’t need a big budget to publish a professional quality book.
Publishing on a Shoestring will be presented by Sam Woodgarth and JB Thomas, both accomplished local authors with over 10 books published between them.
Designed for emerging writers, debut authors and anyone overwhelmed by publishing options, the session breaks down the real costs of publishing, common industry myths and the steps required to get a book into readers’ hands without overspending.
Participants receive a workshop handbook, practical action plan, checklists, decision trees and a comprehensive resource list.
The workshop format includes an interactive presentation, worksheets, case study examples, with questions and answers throughout.
Topics include publishing pathway options, budgeting, self-publishing tasks, logistics and marketing. Workshop participants leave with an action plan they can use.
Ms Woodgarth said “both JB and I have been approached by budding authors locally who are looking for guidance on how to navigate the often confusing number of options out there when it comes to publishing their work”.
“This workshop provides writers clear, realistic guidance and practical steps on how to self-publish, avoid predatory services and save money while producing a book they can be proud of.”
So, if you are a budding young author or a more seasoned writer who is still trying for that lucky break into the big time, this could be a great opportunity. The workshop is on 6 July 10am-3pm at Mossman Library, 14 Mill Street, Mossman. To book and more details, visit www.bit.ly/49sQyyA.
Well I’m off to work on my creative writing and practice my footy disposals, so for now it’s Gazza signing out.
