Free pantry for needy folk
A FREE community pantry offering groceries and fresh food is set to operate weekly in Cairns, providing support for residents without requiring referrals or paperwork.

True Supportive Care will run the community pantry every Friday from 10.30am to 1.30pm at its Cairns office at 131 Lake Street, on the corner of Aplin and Lake streets.
The service is open to everyone and is designed to provide access to basic grocery items in a welcoming environment. According to information released by True Supportive Care, visitors will not be required to complete paperwork or answer questions before receiving assistance.
The pantry will offer a range of staple food items including milk, bread, tinned goods, vegetables and fruit.
Organisers say the initiative is intended to ensure that as many households as possible can benefit from the service, with reasonable limits on individual items.
The pantry is free to access and does not require participants to be registered with the National Disability Insurance Scheme or obtain a referral from another organisation.
Information provided by True Supportive Care states the pantry aims to provide “a little kindness, a few groceries, and a friendly face waiting”.
The organisation has also advised that if supplies run out on a particular week, fresh stock will be available when the pantry reopens the following Friday.
The weekly service began on Friday 5 June, offering residents access to free groceries and staple food items on an ongoing basis.
