Throughout the 12-day intensive course, graduates learnt a range of skills, including road crash rescue techniques, firefighting tactics and equipment maintenance.

They will now be stationed at Cooktown, Herberton, Malanda, Mareeba, Mission Beach and Port Douglas. They are: Kate Smith, Benjeurman Ross, Tyler Orr, Vicki Orr, Michael Martin, Ryan Drury, Aaron Stanley and Damian McCabe.

Member for Barron River Bree James said “having eight local recruits graduate as auxiliary firefighters is a huge moment for Cairns. These are our own people stepping up to protect the community they reside in and that’s something we can all be proud of”.
