Four decades of environmental advocacy showcased
THE ‘Decades of Dedication: CAFNEC’s Legacy of Environmental Stewardship’ exhibit has opened at the Cairns Museum.
Taking place as part of the Cairns 150-year anniversary celebrations, the exhibit marks over 40 years of environmental stewardship in Far North Queensland and captures the massive efforts of thousands of people coming together the protect the places we love.
A CAFNEC Facebook post said Ro Hill and Mary Burg from CAFNEC provided “phenomenal volunteer contributions to this project – you’re both amazing”.
“We’d also like to thank everyone that contributed photographs and artefacts for the show.
“We couldn’t have executed the show without your support.
“We’d also like to extend our immense gratitude to curator Sarah Morgan, Dr Sandi Robb and the wonderful team from Cairns Historical Society and Museum.”
A society and museum Facebook post said Cairns’ 150th anniversary was “a time to reflect on how our city and region have grown and changed – and on the many people and community groups who have helped shape that story”.
“Part of that history is the community voice around how our natural environment should be valued, protected and considered alongside the region’s development.
“For 45 years, the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) has been part of that conversation, bringing together people and groups across Far North Queensland to advocate on environmental issues affecting the region.
“For our next C150 exhibition, Dez Knuckey, Mary Burg and Ro Hill from CAFNEC have worked with Cairns Museum exhibitions curator Sarah Morgan to bring that history into the ground floor gallery.”
The exhibition explores more than four decades of environmental advocacy, introducing some of the people, organisations and campaigns that have contributed to the region.
It closes on 7 November.
