Ferry campaign success
DOUGLAS Shire Council’s recent campaign to attract regional neighbours and locals to explore more of the Shire, in particular the Daintree rainforest, has proven a success.
The Douglas Card promotion has provided a boost for Daintree, following events earlier this year, including the temporary closure of the Daintree River ferry caused by Tropical Low 29U in March.
This economic boost has been achieved by offering free Douglas cards in order to encourage visitation to businesses north of the Daintree River.
A total of 436 cards were issued throughout May and June, helping attract visitors and support businesses during a challenging period for the local community.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the strong uptake demonstrated ongoing support for Daintree businesses and the broader community.
“The Douglas Card promotion was introduced to encourage Far North Queenslanders to continue travelling north of the river and support local businesses following the ferry closure,” she said.
“The uptake of 434 cards indicates there was strong interest in visiting the Daintree and supporting the businesses and operators who contribute so much to our local economy.”
Cr Scomazzon said feedback from ferry staff suggested card users represented a broad cross-section of travellers crossing the river. “The free card was for people living in the Cape right down to the Cassowary Coast and the opportunity was thoroughly enjoyed by many,” she said.
