Ferris wheel upgrade
A NEW ‘Reef Eye’ ferris wheel is coming to the Cairns Esplanade.

A 12-month extension with Westshell Pty Ltd has been approved by Cairns Regional Council to keep the attraction operating from February 2026.
Deputy Mayor Brett Olds told last week’s council meeting that the operators were buying a new wheel so they required security of tenure for the investment.
Council will seek ministerial exemption to explore the option of negotiating a longer-term tenure arrangement, which would be subject to further approvals.
The Reef Eye has become a well-loved attraction, drawing about 475,000 passengers since June 2022 and contributing more than $557,000 in revenue to council.
A council report said its continued operation supported local jobs, enhanced the Esplanade’s vibrancy and provided a family-friendly activity that strengthens the city’s visitor appeal.
“Pursuing a potential longer-term agreement will allow council to better assess future opportunities while maintaining community access to this iconic experience,” it said.
