Extra tree inspections after vehicles crushed
ADDITIONAL tree inspections are to take place in Macrossan St, Port Douglas, after a massive specimen crushed three cars on Friday last week.
The tree fell about 2pm, just as locals and tourists were starting to arrive in town for their Friday night entertainment.
A man was injured and six vehicles were damaged, three of which were severely crushed.
Emergency services were soon on the scene and the fallen tree was cut up and removed by early evening.
Douglas Shire Council says officers will undertake additional inspections of trees in the vicinity of the incident.
It said the tree fell during a period of near-gale-force winds and wetter-than-usual conditions for the dry season.
Council crews quickly removed the fallen tree and associated debris to make the area safe.
Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said her immediate thoughts were with the person injured.
“Our thoughts are with the person injured and we wish them a full and speedy recovery following this frightening experience,” she said.
“Community safety is our highest priority. As a precaution, council officers will inspect nearby trees and assess the area for any potential risks.
“While incidents like this are uncommon, council already maintains a regular and ongoing tree inspection and maintenance program across the Shire.”
Council will provide further information as it becomes available.
