The announcement comes alongside news of additional funding granted to Cairns Regional Council under Queensland Government’s Arts and Cultural Recovery Package which is designed to support artists and venues while social distancing restrictions are in place.

The surprise show is a special coup for Cairns fans with Sultan spending the week in the far north holidaying and recording a few songs and video message as part of a revised 2020 AmericanaFest in Nashville, which will be held with an online format.

““It’s been nice to be here [in Cairns] to sing a few songs in a beautiful venue again,” Sultan said.

“When someone from the Tanks [Arts Centre] asked if I wanted to do a show while I was here, I was like yeah, I’m around, it’ll be nice,” Sultan said.

The former Cairns resident is one of the country’s most revered songwriters, having shared the stage with legends such as Bruce Springsteen and Midnight Oil, and landing his first ARIA Award in 2014 with the certified gold hit record, Blackbird.

With live shows and performances taking a huge hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sultan has a slightly different perspective to taking to the stage again.

“I think every artist will respond to it differently but for me personally, I’ve taken a step back this year and have been enjoying the time away from it,” Sultan said.

The special Cairns show follows an approved Queensland Government Industry COVID Safe plan, which limits the audience capacity to 150 people.

It is the kind of return that Sultan feels comfortable with.

“It’s a small show with limited tickets so it’s sort of like tipping the toe back in the water,” Sultan said.

“The Tanks has always been good to me. It’s nice that we were able to make something work. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Dan Sultan plays Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 28 August 2020. Tickets cost $47.50 for adults and $42.50 for concession holders, seniors and youth/children aged 0-17 years. Tickets are limited and are available from Ticketlink.

To ensure patrons are seated with friends and family, bookings are to be made under the same transaction.
