From about 12pm on both Wednesday and Thursday, spectators can expect an engaging display as owners command their Border Collies, Cocker Spaniels, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Foxies, Afghans, you name it, for two half-days of trials before the main dog confirmation show day on Friday.

The trials will include demonstrations of agility, obedience, tricks and scent work. The Cairns City Kennel Club is behind the event and is looking forward to returning after a year’s break due to COVID-19.

Chief steward for the Dog Section, Belinda Flynn, said spectators will be delighted to see the kinds of skills and tricks dogs can learn to do.

“During the demonstrations, you get to see how handler and dog work closely together,” Belinda said. “There’s a sense of amazement of what the dogs can be taught to do.

“There’s agility and excitement and sometimes comedy when the dog’s not doing what it’s supposed to.”

Club President Gordon Mayne said of particular interest this year will be the scent work section of Friday evening’s dog event. “I believe we’re only the second club in Queensland to introduce scent work as part of the competition,” he said.

The Cairns Show Dog Section’s times will be: Wed and Thu, Trials from 12pm; and Fri ‘Confirmation Show’ from 9.30am until 3-4pm.

The Cairns Show commences this Wednesday July 14 and continues until Friday July 16.
