New single calls for a change of pace

Cairns based singer-songwriter Eddie Skiba has recently released his new single ‘Off the Wheel’, a defining indie rock pop beauty, with a film clip filmed on location in the crazy streets of Tokyo.

‘Off the Wheel’ is a simmering recipe of catchy upbeat rock pop keys melodies and edgy synth, sitting on a bed of grungy guitars, anchored by drum and vocal hooks.

Skiba said the song and film clip capture an attitude of frustration at the often mindless and meaningless, in-a-rush, merry-go-round that is often modern city and suburban life.

“This song reflects on how we go around in circles of work and debt, just keeping our heads above the water while searching for meaning and wanting to get off the merry-go-round,” he said.

"This song was written before the COVID-19 lockdowns but seems very relevant now as the world has had a chance to 'stand still' for a moment and re-assess where we are going as a society."

The single is the first of a few that will come ahead of Skiba’s upcoming full length album ‘Chasing Rainbows’ to be released soon.

This will be his fourth album, following on from “Blend on the Border” (his first album, released 2012), “Dig It” and “Bullet De Bloom.”

A schoolteacher by day, Skiba has been creating his own fresh brand of indie rock/pop for over a decade in Cairns, earned himself a stellar reputation as a songwriter and live performer. His lyrics are an amalgam of personal, social and political imagery.

Skiba has recorded with producers Matt D’Arcy at Basic Studio in Melbourne and ARIA award winning producer Nigel Pegrum at Pegasus Studio Cairns, with tasteful keys additions from the talented Hue Blanes (The Melodics, Illy, Deborah Conway).

Career highlights to date include supports for Hoodoo Gurus, Diesel, Ian Moss, The Break, Colin Hay, Mark Seymour, Nick Barker, Jim Mogine, Dragon, 10CC, Chocolate Starfish and Clint Boge.

Skiba has done tours to Ireland and Austria with long-time friend and musical collaborator Warren Smith, as well as appearing at Cairns Blues Festival, Mission Evolve Festival, Cairns NYE concert, Tanks Arts Centre, V8 Supercars Concert, Metricon Stadium, Brisbane Powerhouse, Tablelands Festival, Rail Jam Concert Mt Buller, Gershwin Room at the Espy, Cairns Festival, and Carnival on Collins Festival.

Skiba has enjoyed airplay on Triple M Melbourne, Marn Grook Footy Show, ABC Radio, UGFM Victoria, SEA FM, Cairns FM, Plenty Valley FM, 4CA, Radio Port Douglas, Smokestack Radio UK, Night Flight Radio South Africa, as well as having songs from his ‘Bullet De Bloom’ CD feature on Channel Sevens ‘Suns TV’ and his song ‘Cold Feet’ feature on Mt Buller Souvenir DVD Cold Front.

Skiba is also a three-time nominee for solo artist of the year in the Time Out HIT Awards.
