Horse Whispering Guy back at the Cairns Show

INTERNATIONAL horseman, entertainer and bush poet Guy McLean is back at the Cairns Show this year with his special brand of liberty training demonstrations, sure to thrill audiences.

By David Gardiner

Liberty training and performance is where the horse is commanded without any physical touch and requires high levels of skill and patience by the trainer.

Guy has travelled widely with his expert equine teams and stock horses to major shows and festivals across the United States, Canada and Australia, and still is the first official Australian Stock Horse Ambassador.

As well as twice being World Champion of ‘Road to the Horse’, he is also a past Australian Champion at Equitana Australia, and has been twice crowned Australian Bush Poet Champion.

Last year Guy and his travelling show were in the US when COVID-19 caused the cancellation of several shows he and his team were booked into. They made their way back to Australia, but faced a similar run of shutdowns and cancellations.

Guy decided to “open the books” again to training horses and within a short time, had a waiting list of 200 or so horses, showing the demand for his special skills. He is still trying to “get around to seeing them,” he said.

This will be Guy’s 10th Cairns Show. He says Cairns is one of his favourites because he believes local people appreciate and enjoy his knowledge and experience of the bush and the outback. “I take them to the bush with my show and they genuinely appreciate the great work that the stock men and women out at the station do.”

The Cairns Show commences this Wednesday July 14 and continues until Friday July 16.
