Cyber-chic: Fashions go virtual this year

The much-loved social facet of Cairns Amateurs Carnival may be on hold for a year, but nothing will stop its sparkle when it comes to fashion, with today’s launch of the “Cairns Amateurs Cairns Central Virtual Fashions on the Field 2020” competition.

For a chance at $8000 worth of prizes across the four categories of Gold Class Racewear, Open Ladies Racewear, Open Mens Racewear and Open Local Ladies Racewear, entrants simply need to send three photographs – front, back and detail of outfit.

Judging criteria is based on style and originality, interpretation of latest trends, appropriateness of race wear for a spring carnival in Cairns, attention to detail, style, design and quality of workmanship of millinery, grooming and deportment.

To judge this year’s hotly contested fashion clash, Cairns Amateurs Carnival has secured three of Australia’s most awarded Fashions on the Field (FOTF) competitors, Emma Scodellaro, Carle Rutlegde and Neil Carpenter.

Cairns Amateurs Carnival Event Manager Victoria Jennings said these highly qualified judges had been chosen to ensure the event continues its tradition, and is a true reflection of contemporary trends, style and elegance.

“Considering this year’s pandemic restrictions, we have sought to do things a bit differently and enhance what is already a very high-level competition by opening the field beyond north Queensland to Australia wide entries,” said Ms Jennings.

“With Cairns Amateurs contestants regularly taking line honours at Randwick and Flemington we know Cairns is up with the best which is why we painstakingly sought out new judges and ways of doing things.”

The competition's major sponsors are Cairns Central and Myer Cairns. Prize sponsors include Myer Cairns, Laser Clinics Australia (Cairns Central), racing fashion illustration of winning outfit by Luisa Manea, Lending Luxury, Sonlia and Millinery by Mel vouchers, Ladies in Racing subscription and Cairns Amateurs tickets. The winning local winner will also receive an Ochre restaurant voucher and Blueclick Photography photo session.

Entries will be accepted from 9am Monday, September 7, 2020 until 6pm, Saturday September 12, 2020.  All entries (three photos) will be uploaded to the Cairns Amateurs Virtual FOTF Gallery on Sunday, September 13, 2020.  Winners will be announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.  Visit the Cairns Amateurs Facebook Page or Cairns Amateurs website for all terms and conditions.
