AS a further sign of the Far North’s tourism economy surging back, the Cairns Aquarium will welcome its onemillionth visitor through the doors this week, cementing itself as the City’s key tourist attraction and leading marine science educational facility.

Opened in late 2017, the Cairns Aquarium has enthralled hundreds of thousands of visitors each year with a mesmerising glimpse of aquatic life in our oceans, the Great Barrier Reef, mangroves, rivers and gulf savannah seasonal waterways.

The Cairns Aquarium also provides daily educational talks about biodiversity, habitats and practical ways to improve the environment.

CEO & Co-Founder Daniel Leipnik said that the celebration was very meaningful considering all the issues with border closures through 2020 and 2021.

“Our visitors are mostly interested in the Great Barrier Reef, and the Cairns Aquarium has become that “must-do” experience for people,” Mr Leipnik said

“They can learn more about reef life by getting close to colourful live corals and exquisite marine fish often before a reef trip itself,” Mr Leipnik said.

It is not only visitors to the region who have enjoyed the Cairns Aquarium; it has also been a real hit with Cairns’ locals.

“Our membership base grows year on year,” Mr Leipnik said.

“The Cairns Aquarium is where local families choose to get out of the heat, humidity, rain, or even just as a space for a bit of peace and quiet by sitting down and watching large sharks and giant stingrays gently swim by.”

“We’re at ‘997,785’ visitors now, so we know that the One-Millionth visitor is due any day.”

The One-Millionth visitor will be treated to a VIP welcome.

“We’ve got a $2,500 package of gifts for the lucky visitor and family, including free entry, a luxury three-course lunch at Dundee’s, a Dive-with-the-Sharks experience, an Aquarium by Twilight guided nocturnal tour and three-course dinner,” he said.

“A souvenir store gift voucher and an invitation to be the guests of honour at a “thank you” dinner we are hosting on Thursday, March 31 for our agents, wholesalers, ticket re-sellers and education clients.”

For its management and passionate team of 50 animal carers and wildlife educators, celebrating this milestone is just part of the reward of operating an Aquarium.

“Knowing that we have been able to connect with a million people to highlight the amazing creatures of our reef and rainforests and make visitors aware of the importance of improving the planet’s health is the greatest reward for all of us,” Leipnik concluded.
