This modern musical’s unconventional structure unfold as Cathy (an actress) tells her story in reverse, from the end of their turbulent relationship, whilst Jamie (a novelist) tells his story chronologically from the spark of their initial meeting.

The characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

The Last Five Years debuted in Chicago in 2001 and opened Off-Broadway in 2002 where it won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music  and Lyrics, as well as Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Orchestrations and Outstanding Set Design.

It received the Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Actor, and the Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.

Since then the show has been performed in London and Europe as well as being adapted for a film in 2015 starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordon.

The Last Five Year Musical opens this weekend at the Tanks Arts Centre Cairns.

Faithfully brought to life by both Andrea Allumay and Michael Lee Porter.

Tickets are still available through Ticketlink. The performance runs this weekend as well as Friday to Sunday of next weekend.
