Member for Cook David Kempton said e-mobility devices provided economical and environmentally-efficient transport, however, there was a significant community safety issue, especially in relation to young users.

“We need to find a balance between the lawful and unlawful use of e-bikes and e-scooters, pedestrian safety whilst ensuring young people are trained in the safe use of devices and the road rules,” he said.

Member for Barron River Bree James said the inquiry was a vital step in ensuring the transport network evolved safely and inclusively.

“E-mobility devices are changing the way we get around and we need to make sure our laws, regulations and infrastructure keep pace,” she said.

Member for Mulgrave Terry James said many Far North Queenslanders were rightly concerned about the rise in people using PMDs dangerously and illegally – especially around schools, shopping centres and shared paths.”

“We’ve seen too many close calls and serious injuries,” he said. There have been six fatalities involving e-scooters in Queensland this year.
