Dusty woos big crowd
AFL legend Dustin ‘Dusty’ Martin has not ruled out returning to Port Douglas to play for the Crocs after drawing an estimated crowd of 4000 at the Croc Pit last Saturday in his first game since retiring in 2024.

His performance of two goals, three clearances, three 150s and 19 disposals helped the Crocs win 107 (16.11) to 60 (9.6).
Having played over 300 games for Richmond and winning numerous accolades in his 15 season career, this one-off return game against the South Cairns Cutters would be special for a number of reasons, particularly for both the Crocs and Dustin Martin fans who filled up the Port Douglas Sports Complex for the day.
After a close but slow first quarter, the Crocs began to gel with Dustin Martin showing his quality on a number of occasions.
Much of the second half was dominated by the Crocs with the eventual scoreline Port Douglas Crocs 107, South Cairns Cutters 60.
“The boys were good and they got going in the end,” Martin said.
“We got the wind in the second quarter, which was the most important thing,” he said.
Martin was impressed with the crowd support, saying “it’s a great club, a great community and I can’t thank the people enough for letting me be here”. When asked if he could see himself settling in the Douglas Shire, Mr Martin replied “coming from Victoria, it’s a bit too hot for me, but it is definitely a place I will come to visit”.
Would the Richmond legend consider another game for the Port Douglas Crocs in the future?
“I’ll never say never, but I’ll just have to see how the body pulls up after this,” he said.
Port Douglas Crocs president Matty Laskey was delighted.
“We expected 4000 people and we definitely got that through the gates,” he said.
“It took a lot to make this day happen and it wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing committee and the tireless volunteers.
“A big thanks must go to the crowd for providing an electric atmosphere, Tony Singarella (Richmond FC) for his ongoing support and, of course, Dusty Martin for his commitment during the time he spent with the Port Douglas Crocs FC both on and off the field.
“A truly lasting imprint has been left within our club for both seniors and juniors.
“This event has also had a huge impact on our whole town with an influx of interstate visitors travelling to Port Douglas for the game.”
Crocs men’s development team beat South Cairns Cutters 67-43.
