Djabugay people’s stories and culture in focus
THE Djabugay community will celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week with two events in Kuranda, including the premiere of a new documentary and the screening of music videos created by local young people.
Djabugay Aboriginal Corporations, YouthLink Kuranda and Desert Pea Media have invited the community to attend ‘Bulurrru – Story, Song, Film and Art’ from Kuranda Bama, a free event at the Kuranda Amphitheatre on Saturday 11 July.
The NAIDOC Week celebration will showcase the creativity, leadership and cultural strength of the Djabugay community through music, film, storytelling and art.
As Australia marks 50 years of NAIDOC, organisers say the event celebrates the voices of Elders and the next generation through music, film, storytelling and art, recognising the enduring strength of culture and the importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer for young people.
The evening will feature the world premiere of ‘Voices of Our Elders’, a new Desert Pea Media documentary developed with Djabugay Elders, alongside the premiere of three new music videos created by local young people through the ‘Crossroads: Kuranda’ project.
Live performances, cultural showcases and community celebrations are also planned.
Music will be provided by Cloud 9, Will Brim and KDA NextGen, with dance groups, projection displays and art exhibitions also forming part of the program.
The event will also include the premiere screening of the film ‘Voices of Our Elders’.
The free community event will be held at the Kuranda Amphitheatre, with gates opening at 5pm ahead of a 6pm start. A free meal will be available from 5pm.
Organisers have advised that the event will be drug and alcohol-free.
