Develop your talents
CAIRNS Art Gallery is inviting the community to take part in a range of art courses, wellness activities and exhibitions as part of its July program, with several events already offering last-minute places.

Among the upcoming opportunities is advanced soft pastels, a six-week course with Sue Schreiber that began on Wednesday 15 July. Designed for participants who have completed beginner and intermediate courses or already have a solid foundation in drawing, the course explores colour theory, tonal balance and composition. Classes ran on Wednesdays from 15 July to 19 August for adults aged 16 and over.
Also available was abstract acrylics, a two-day weekend workshop with Maharlina Gorospe-Lockie that ran on 18 and 19 July. Open to adults aged 16 and over, the workshop encourages participants of all experience levels to experiment with acrylic paint and mixed media while exploring abstract painting techniques.
The gallery is also expanding its public program with ‘Strings of Stillness – Yin Yoga’ with ‘Live Harp’, the first event in its monthly ‘Gallery Rituals’ wellness series. Held on Sunday 2 August, the session will feature ‘Yin Yoga’ led by Liza Soenario from ‘Flow’ with ‘Nature Yoga & Qigong’, accompanied by harpist Joy Zahner from ‘Musique Funtastique’. The event will take place within Philomena Yeatman’s ‘Babim, Muudjum, Djanguul’ exhibition and is open to adults aged 16 and over.
Poetry will also feature in the gallery’s August calendar with ‘Open Late’ with ‘Red Room Poetry’ on Thursday 6 August. The free event will bring together six feminist poets from across Australia during Poetry Month, with live music, refreshments, an open mic for local poets and access to the current exhibition ‘Brush: Women Painters’. RSVP is appreciated. Alongside the public programs, visitors can explore a series of exhibitions including ‘Woven Together: Undivided We Rise’, ‘Kin’O’Centrism’, ‘Spirits in the Ink and Brush: Women Painters’, with exhibitions continuing through to October. Bookings are open for the courses and events, while the current exhibitions remain on display at Cairns Art Gallery over the coming months.
