Defending our coastline
THE Royal Australian Navy’s new Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Matt Buckley, has visited HMAS Cairns as part of Cairns Defence Week 2026, recognising personnel and highlighting the Navy’s longstanding ties with the Far North community.
Vice Admiral Buckley visited HMAS Cairns on Wednesday, where he held a question-and-answer session with personnel, presented recognition awards and acknowledged the outstanding service, professionalism and dedication of those serving at the base. He also toured the newly-completed Cairns shared user facility and Tropical Reef Shipyard.
The visit comes as the Navy celebrates 125 years of service, with Cairns Defence Week showcasing the connection between the Royal Australian Navy and the Cairns community. A ceremonial sunset will be held at the Cairns Cenotaph from 6.15pm on Friday 31 July before the HMAS Cairns open day on Saturday, where the public will be invited to tour the naval base, inspect HMAS Diamantina, enjoy performances by the Royal Australian Navy Band and take part in watercraft rides.
Commander Andrew ‘Andy’ Thorpe said Defence Week was an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between HMAS Cairns and the community.
“It’s just an opportunity where we can connect with the public, the community, also a way for us to say thanks to the support that the Cairns community provides HMAS Cairns and our defence partners.”
Visitors will also be able to board HMAS Diamantina, which recently returned from Operation Render Safe in the Pacific.
Lieutenant Commander Sam Mairs said the open day gave people a chance to better understand the Navy’s work.
