Cricketer stars at world cup
FOR all young athletes it’s a lifelong dream to represent their nation at the highest stage – a world cup.

Douglas Shire’s Kai Wall has made that dream a reality, representing Japan at the under-19 cricket world cup.
The 17-year-old prodigy is no stranger to having an array of sporting silverware.
He was named Douglas Shire Council’s junior sports award winner for 2026, recognised for an outstanding season that ultimately resulted in representing Japan at the under-19 world cup in South Africa in January.
The monumental achievement was described by Kai as “extraordinary”.
“Surreal. It is the best comp I have played in by far,” he said.
“Seeing the standard of all the best up-and-coming players in the world was incredible. To be able to play against them was amazing.”
Kai said this Japanese team was battle tested for a competition like this, being a very close and well-gelled team, playing together before.
“It was mainly the same group of boys, we had very strong culture around them,” he said.
Kai said his stand-out moments came when he opened the bowling against Sri Lanka.
Japan’s under-19 squad is a multicultural mix, with several players and staff linked to Australian roots.

Competing against the world’s best young cricket prospects has given Kai a path on what is needed to play at the highest level.
“It shows a standard I can try and work my way up to,” he said.
“I’m not quite at the level of some of the top players at the moment, but it gives me a lot of confidence and determination moving forward.”
While being a Douglas Shire kid, Kai plays his club cricket for Barron River Cricket Club in Trinity Beach where he is their star young gun.
While that season is well and truly at the pointy end, the world doesn’t stop for Kai. He’s determined to continue improving day by day.
Through all of this Kai is still in high school, completing year 12 and trying to carefully navigate his cricket career while also studying.
While Kai is still riding the momentum wave of the world cup he knows what’s next and that’s continuing to work on his game and fine tune whatever is necessary to give himself the best possible opportunity to represent his nation multiple times again in the future and create a lasting legacy.
