The popular 71km track, which starts just north of the Daintree Village, is considered one of the most challenging and picturesque 4WD tracks in the country.

However, a Douglas Shire Council spokesman said it currently remained closed due to wet season conditions and recent heavy rains.

Originally the Cairns Regional Electricity Board (CREB) service track for the old powerline to Cooktown, it is notorious for its rugged terrain, river crossings, dense rainforest and stunning natural beauty.

“Anyone driving the track when it is closed, and who gets stranded in an emergency, will be assisted by search and rescue” the council spokesman said.

“However, vehicles will be left behind.

“Drivers are also reminded that insurances generally don’t cover damages incurred when travelling on a closed road.”

The spokesman said Douglas Shire Council officers would reassess the track before reopening.
