Couple win Great Pyramid Race in event-first
A SUPER fit couple have created history by winning the men’s and women’s titles in the 67th Great Pyramid Race.
Billy Curtis and Abbey Watson, of the Sunshine Coast, are the first to win the men’s and women’s races in the same year.
Curtis also achieved another remarkable first by backing up to win the Half Pyramid Race immediately after claiming victory in the main event.
Event manager Renee Edwards said it was another unforgettable day of competition, community spirit and determination, with about 400 competitors taking part across five race distances last Saturday (1 August).
She said the iconic event once again attracted runners of all ages and abilities to Gordonvale, with the feature Woolworths Great Pyramid Race selling out well before race day.
Athletes competed in the Great Pyramid Race, Half Pyramid Race, Race to the Base, 3km Race and 1800m Junior Race, while thousands of spectators lined the streets and gathered at Norman Park to cheer competitors home.
The event also featured local markets, sponsor displays, entertainment and family activities, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day.
Ms Edwards said the success of the event was a credit to the incredible committee, sponsors, local businesses and the Gordonvale community.
“Events like the Great Pyramid Race simply wouldn’t happen without the dedication of our volunteers and the ongoing support of our sponsors, community and business community,” she said.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in making this year’s event such a success.
“The committee also extends its sincere thanks to every athlete who took on the challenge, whether they were chasing a podium finish, completing their first event or simply testing themselves against one of Queensland’s most iconic running events.
“As the dust settles on another successful year, planning is already underway for 2027, and we are looking forward to welcoming competitors back to Gordonvale for another celebration of endurance, community and the unique challenge of Walsh’s Pyramid. Save the date: Saturday 7 August 2027.”
