Council and newspaper to create Douglas 150 Magazine
CAIRNS Local News has been selected by Douglas Shire Council to produce the official Douglas 150 Magazine, marking a major milestone as the region prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027.

The commemorative booklet will be produced ahead of Australia Day 2027, when it will be officially released as part of the opening celebrations for a year-long program recognising the history, people and communities of the Douglas Shire.
Cairns Local News will be responsible for compiling and designing the publication, working with council on editorial content and historical material, as well as seeking advertising support from businesses and organisations wanting to be part of the milestone publication.
The project follows Cairns Local News and its publishing team’s experience in producing a range of special publications and community guides, including the Cairns 150th anniversary publications, the Disaster Preparation Guide and Cairns Italian Festival publications.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said council was pleased to be working with Cairns Local News on such an important project.
“The Douglas 150 Magazine will serve as the official guide to the year long calendar of events, activities and celebrations being delivered as part of the Douglas 150 milestone,” Cr Scomazzon said.

“The publication will provide residents, visitors, community organisations and businesses with comprehensive information about the anniversary program and opportunities to participate in and support the celebrations.”
Cr Scomazzon said the publication would also help capture the history and stories that have shaped the Douglas region over the past 150 years.
“The publication will feature event listings, historical content, community stories and information highlighting the significance of the Douglas 150 anniversary,” she said.
As preparations gather momentum, Douglas Shire Council is also seeking community input into the design of an official Douglas 150 logo, which will become a central part of the identity of the anniversary celebrations.
Once selected and formally adopted by council, the logo will be incorporated across marketing, promotional material and communications. It will also be available to local businesses, event organisers and community organisations for their own promotional activities associated with Douglas 150.
With preparations now underway, the Douglas 150 Magazine is expected to become both a practical guide to the 2027 celebrations and a keepsake commemorating the people, places and events that have shaped the Douglas region over the past 150 years.
