CORPORATE staff are mainly using a large section of a public car park reserved solely for the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service in Bunda St.

Cairns Local News revealed in July that that most of the 95 allocated spaces remained empty while regular users of the council property were forced to find alternative parking.

The arrangement was made to provide parking for nurses, doctors and other medical staff who have been unable to find long-term parking in and around Cairns Hospital while CHHHS works on a long term plan for a new multi-storey car park nearby.

CHHHS chief executive officer Leena Singh said since the park and ride service was started on 1 July, “we’ve seen a steadily increasing number of staff taking advantage of this convenient option”.

Shuttle buses are used on a 20-minute rotation 12 hours a day, Monday to Friday.

“The health service has over 500 staff working in corporate buildings throughout the city, many of whom often travel to and from the hospital.

“The shuttle service has meant those staff do not need to take their cars, helping free up short term parking spaces near Cairns Hospital for patients and visitors.”
