The Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said that a significant amount of work on design and flood modelling was conducted throughout 2020 to ensure the upgraded facility has acceptable flooding impacts.

“Subsequently when the detailed design process commenced it was identified that flooding impacts were greater, and changes to the design were required to make the project viable.”

“In December 2020, a shortened ramp structure (by approximately 40 metres) with the same two boat ramp lanes and fixed walkway (down the middle) as presented to the community in early 2020 was found to be the only viable option to mitigate unacceptable upstream flooding impacts.”

“This design requires a small amount (approximately 1500 m3) of excavation out to the main channel.”

“MSQ is currently finalising the design plans and preparing a community/stakeholder update for late February 2021.”

“When the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) awards the contract, the boat ramp will be a major step closer to reality,” Ms Lui said.

“This was a commitment I made at the previous election and I am delighted that all my commitments made at the 2017 election have been fulfilled in my first term.

A total of $3.2 million has been allocated to the design and construction of the Newell Beach Boat Ramp.
