Up to 50 participants have jumped out of bed each week to attend the Tuesday morning class at 9am since it was launched in October last year.

The group celebrated their strong attendance and health outcomes with morning tea at the picturesque park in Port Douglas this week.

Douglas Shire Council’s Sport and Recreation Officer Renee Ker said she was keen to continue the popular program next year.

“It is looking really positive for future programs in the new year, Douglas Shire Council is hitting the participation targets and we are currently preparing a grant application for future funding,” she said.

“Council has also committed some funding which will support the ability to continue to run the programs. It is nice to see such an incredible range of participants from young to old and of all abilities.

“The connection within this group is evident and I welcome everyone to be part of, come on down and try a Tai Chi class.”

During COVID-19 restrictions the classes went online with many participants who had never done Tai Chi, joining in for the first time through an online streaming service, which continued with some participants joining in the park-based class once classes resumed.

The free fitness classes run on Tuesdays at Rex Smeal Park at 9am until December 15.

An announcement will likely happen late December to advise of the outcome with future programs for 2021.
