A NAIDOC WEEK themed workshop, new activity trail and opportunities to learn some Yidinji words are just a few of the activities which have been organised for children during the school holidays at the Cairns Museum.

Cairns on a Canvas workshops provide children with the opportunity to create their own masterpiece inspired by Sihote’s Nioge exhibition of ceremonial “tapa” cloth designs by the Omie people of Papua New Guinea. 

The Cairns on Canvas workshops are suitable for children 5 – 12 years of age and will be held on Tuesday, June 28 and Wednesday, June 29 from 10:30 am to 11:30am. The cost is $10 for Member children, $15 for Non-member children. 

There are also NAIDOC Week workshops with the Miriki Performing Arts group. Miriki will facilitate a series of fun activities based around Indigenous language, movement, and music for children 5 – 12 years of age. 

The NAIDOC workshops will be held on Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday, July 6 from 10:30am to 11:30 am. Entry is free for Member children or $6 for Non-Member children. 

There are also several free options such as the Museum Activity Trails. There are numerous family friendly activity trails including a NAIDOC Scavenger Hunt & Activity Booklet. 

Yidinji Word Challenge is an all-ages activity where participants will be able to learn the meaning of different Yidinji words. Visit the display and fill in the entry sheet for a chance to win a Museum Prize Pack.

The Colouring-In Competition is a popular free event. Sheets are available from Museum Reception and colouring-in tables will be set up on the verandah. The winner will receive a Cairns Museum Prize Pack.

Winners of the Yidinji Word Challenge and Colouring-In Competition will be drawn on July 12. Entries for both competitions must be lodged in the Entry Box at Reception.
