Is it a bird?.... Is it a plane?...... Is it a superhero?...... Yes! And The Cairns City Library is the place to be this Sunday for all superheros and villains in the north.

Don your favourite superhero costume, dress as movie villain, or pretend you’re a Manga character and join the festivities at Comic Fest this weekend.

With the ongoing success of the Marvel and DC movie franchises, Sunday’s Comic Fest at Cairns City Library has a morning of free activities dedicated to all things comic and cosplay.

Councillor Cathy Zeiger said that Comic Fest demonstrated the diversity of literature and activities available at Cairns Libraries.

“Modern libraries are so much more than aisles of books,” Cr Zeiger said.

“Across our Cairns Library branches, we have a great range of comic books and graphic novels available to suit readers from primary school age and up.

“Reading is such an important part of life, and these types of books are great as they often engage the most reluctant of readers and promote literacy.”

Those attending this year’s event will have the chance to meet artist and illustrator Julie Haysom who will deliver a comic art workshop, enjoy a musical performance by Jelly Oshen, and participate in tabletop and board games.

Younger attendees will be entertained by First 5 Forever fun, while the STEAM Explorer Stations include cardboard hero station, digital Manga creation and augmented reality activities.

Attendees are encouraged to dress-up as their favourite comic, Manga or superhero character for the chance to win prizes for best dressed and best low budget DIY costume.

“I’d encourage everyone to put on their favourite superhero costume and have a little fun,” Cr Zeiger said.

“We all know little ones love the chance to dress up but getting in costume can also be heaps fun for us ‘older kids’ and give parents a great way to engage with their children.”

Comic Fest will take over the Cairns City Library, located at the corner of Abbott and Aplin streets, this Sunday July 11 from 9am until midday.

Dress-up is encouraged but participants are asked to consider the family-friendly nature of the event in their costume selection. Swords, knives, other metal objects with an edge and weaponry capable of shooting projectiles are not permitted. Children aged under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.
