The community are encouraged to unite at events to respect and reflect on our own stories which make us uniquely Australian.

Australia Day celebrations on January 26 will commence at the Cassowary Coast Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony.

The community this year was invited to ‘Nominate a Mate’ to recognise local, personal achievements, and acknowledge individuals who play a vital role in sustaining our community culture.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said he encourages the community to use this day to reflect and share in the celebration of our diverse community, and our stories which makes us all uniquely Australian.

“Each year it’s an honour to celebrate the unique stories and local heroes in our region at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

“Australia Day festivities are a wonderful opportunity to welcome and congratulate new citizens who now call the Cassowary Coast home. This is a momentous time for our new citizens and signifies a new chapter beginning.

“We also celebrate the achievements of outstanding community members when we honour our Australia Day award recipients. The awards are a special way to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our community members who take pride in their involvement in the community and are welldeserving in recognition.

“I would like to thank those who have ‘Nominated a Mate’ and put forward their local hero, neighbour or friend, who contributes to the growth of the region as a diverse and culturally rich community.

“Our family friendly events are also back again with Council partnering with local community groups to host Australia Day pool parties. The community can keep cool at Mission Beach, Tully, Cardwell or Innisfail pools. Entry will be free with entertainment and a sausage sizzle lunch available and gold coin donations welcome. Entry conditions will also align with the State Government COVID- 19 vaccination mandates,” said Councillor Nolan.

The Australia Day Pool Parties will be held at: Innisfail Memorial Baths – 10:30am – 2:00pm Tully Swimming Pool – 10:30am – 3:00pm Cardwell Swimming Pool – 10:30am – 3:00pm Mission Beach Aquatic Centre – 10:30am – 3:00pm.
