A supermarket spokeswoman said Coles had invested in additional storage facilities, emergency stockpiles, along with a range of alternative supply route contingencies if needed.

“The preparation starts months before cyclone warnings are issued and it’s a story most customers never see,” she said.

“Coles has invested in additional storage space in facilities in Cairns and Townsville, aimed at holding extra supply of a small range of essential goods like water, baby formula and frozen vegetables.

“By strategically positioning hundreds of pallets of essential supplies across Far North Queensland we are ready to get extra supplies into our stores when and where they are needed.

“The extra storage space, combined with pre-planned alternative supply routes, mean Coles can respond faster as, and when, severe weather impacts Queensland communities.

“Year-round team training, established emergency protocols and backup generators at key stores ensures operations can continue during severe weather events.”
