From its early days as a small settlement surrounded by rainforest and Reef, the city has grown while keeping nature front of mind.

Today, there’s a clear focus on protecting these iconic landscapes, with locals, businesses and leaders all playing a part.

Whether it’s through conservation efforts, sustainable development or community action, Cairns has shown a commitment to making sure its unique environment is looked after for generations to come.

Ecofiesta

FROM humble beginnings as CAFNEC’s Enviro Fiesta in 1990 and the Sustainable Living Expo at TAFE in the mid-2000s, Cairns Ecofiesta is now a staple on the Cairns event calendar.

This annual celebration of sustainable living in the tropics was reimagined by council into a festival-style event in 2015, growing every year and eventually moving to Munro Martin Parklands in 2021.

Live music, food and family fun combine with inspiring ideas and simple, hands-on ways to help people make a difference every day.

The event, on Sunday 21 June, now features around 100 stalls – many of which are run by volunteers from local community groups – and attracts up to 10,000 people each year, making it one of Far North Queensland’s most loved community festivals.

Ecofiesta reflects our deep connection to the special and unique natural environment we call home.

A dynamic showcase of sustainability in action, it brings together local businesses, innovators and community champions who are leading the way in low-impact living ideas, eco-friendly products and clean-tech innovations.

Families wander through interactive exhibits, children learn through play, and visitors experience our region’s rich cultural heritage.

As Cairns celebrates 150 years, Ecofiesta continues to serve as a living demonstration of our community’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
