Children’s swimming lessons a must for early learning
CHILDS World Swim School in Bentley Park has been operating as a dedicated swim school for Childs World Early learning centres since February 2013 and is proud to be Australia’s first dedicated Child Care Swim School.
The Gold level AUSTSWIM recognised centre has delivered thousands of swimming lessons to children.
With the high number of drownings and near-drownings in our area and across the country, Childs World Swim School is working hard to keep lessons affordable and accessible to all their families.
It is Childs Worlds’ philosophy that all children should have access to swimming lessons as part of their Early Years Learning if we, as a country, are serious about reducing childhood drowning in Australia.
Swim school coordinator Catherine Pritchard said Childs World Swim School offered all the elements to make sure children are safe in the water.
“Water safety is a component of every swimming lesson,” Ms Pritchard said.
“From waiting to be invited into the water at the start of the lesson to being able to swim to the edge and climb out unaided.
“These skills and routines can help to make our kids safer in and around the water,” she said.
“We do a water safety week each term here, and we speak very explicitly with the students about what they can do to be safer and some strategies that they can use if they find themselves in trouble.
“I still vividly remember a parent whose son got into trouble at a local swimming hole thanking me for saving his life in our first year.
“We had just done water safety week and, though he wasn’t a strong swimmer, he was able to use some strategies we had talked about and practised making it to safety,” she said.
