Children’s safety No. 1
MORE than 2000 community members gathered under the shady trees of Ravizza Park, Edmonton to mark a major milestone as the South Side Celebration marked its 20th anniversary.
The free, inclusive event brought together families, local service providers and community organisations for an unforgettable afternoon of fun, connection and safety awareness under the theme ‘Protecting children is everybody’s business’.
Mission Australia’s Hambledon House Community Centre spearheaded the organising committee alongside several local partners.
Coinciding with Cairns Regional Council’s 150th anniversary, the celebration successfully promoted children’s safety and community connectedness.
Mission Australia regional leader Gwion Cain, who was master of ceremonies, praised the extraordinary turnout.
“Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
“This 20-year milestone demonstrates the powerful role that strong, connected communities play in supporting our youth – and it is a wonderful reflection of the incredible diversity and spirit of Cairns South.”
The park was alive with high-energy activities, featuring soccer drills with Southside Comets, traditional Edor Games, circus workshops and a petting zoo.
On stage, the crowds were treated to the Cairns Southside Youth Concert Band, interactive zumba, line dancing and a grand finale of Taiko drumming.
The celebration concluded under the stars with live music and a special open-air screening of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’.
