Children’s music act is just a teeny tiny bit of fun
ARIA-winning children’s music act Teeny Tiny Stevies will bring songs, laughs and a family-focused live show to Tanks Arts Centre on 28 September.
The group, known for songs such as ‘Boss of my own body’ and ‘I only go to the toilet on the toilet’, is returning to Cairns with a show designed to appeal to children and parents alike.
Sibylla Stephen, known as Byll in the band, said that many of the group’s early songs grew directly from the experience of raising children.
“I think a lot of our songs, at least the early ones, were me trying to communicate with my own children,” she said.
“I think you know that many of the parenting struggles people go through are so universal.”
Ms Stephen said music offered a way to make those ideas memorable for families.
“We kind of thought that if these lyrics are going to get stuck in kids’ and parents’ heads, let’s make them really good and sophisticated, and add something different to the scene that’s already there.”
The group’s latest album, ‘Brain fart’, draws inspiration from everyday moments of forgetfulness and explores the idea that people think and learn differently.
Ms Stephen said the title track was her favourite and carried a message for children who might sometimes struggle to keep up.
“Every single person has a different experience, and their brain works differently,” she said.
“We kind of wanted to address that in a really fun, chill way, if that makes sense.”
Families attending the Cairns show can expect about an hour of music and audience interaction, with Ms Stephen noting there was no expectation that children would experience the performance in any particular way.
“Lots of engagement, lots of fun,” she said.
“We sort of hope that for parents, especially live music lovers who’ve now got young families of their own who might find it hard to get out and see live music, we’re really hoping that this fills a gap for them.”
The Cairns visit has been supported by a Creative Australia grant and Ms Stephen said the group did not expect to return to the city soon.
“We’re going to make the most of it and have the best time. It’ll be great if there can be, you know, a big rocking crowd there too from Cairns.”
