Professor Twomey said it was “an enormous privilege to be entrusted with this new role”.

“Firstly, I would like to pay tribute to our immediate past president, Doug Hoey, for his outstanding leadership of the World Pharmacy Council for the last five years,” he said. “His dedication, unwavering passion and professionalism has ensured our council has continued to grow as the global voice of community pharmacy.

“I am truly honoured that the board has put their trust in me to serve as president and I pledge to do my upmost to build on the legacy of those before me.

“We all know that these are incredibly challenging times for community pharmacy in all of our communities. Geopolitical and financial insecurity combined with falling societal trust in institutions ensure we have a significant challenge, however I fully believe that we are exceptionally well placed to navigate these threats and turn them into opportunities.

“I look forward to working with our member organisations to elevate the profession and ensure pharmacists are recognised as essential providers of primary care worldwide.”

Mr Hoey, who will serve as council vice-president of the WPC, said Prof. Twomey was “an outstanding leader and a generational talent”.

“I know he will continue serve WPC and its members superbly,” he said.

Prof. Twomey has been the national president of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia since 2021 and is a partner in the Alive Pharmacy Warehouse chain of seven outlets, mainly in Cairns.
