The Edge Hill businessman (not Whitfield as was incorrectly reported last week) is challenging long-time president Tom Hedley for the role.

She said she had received a lot of support from the community and many of the 290 members.

“As, I have said, I want Cannon Park (racecourse) to be a multi-use community venue,” Ms Conlan said.

“I have been approached by licensed, sporting and equestrian clubs who want to get involved,” she said.

In last week’s Cairns Local News, Ms Conlan suggested opportunities for the large site could include a permanent social or entertainment club, as well as a training facility for young people.

She said it was “time for change”.

Ms Conlan said no-one had challenged the president for at least 20 years and Mr Hedley had been in the position for at least 10 years.

She said she was “a disruptor”.

“We need to get the community more involved and make it accessible to everybody ... inclusive,” she said.

In her latest email to members, she said “my skill set, business connections, dedication and community involvement will assist the club with becoming an employer of choice and evolution of the CJC facility to a 365-day-a-year financially-secure proposition.

“I propose and seek to attract a committee and membership that is energised, open to change, without confliction, forward thinking, engaged throughout the community with the ability to adapt,” Ms Conlan said.

On CLN’s Facebook page, Ms Conlan has received good backing.

“Best wishes Rebecca I’ve voted fo3r you and you deserve this. You’ll be a fantastic president and we are so excited for you to make a difference at CJC,” said Mary Stitt.

Ballot papers, some of which have been delayed, have been sent to members and must be returned by Monday 12 October before the annual general meeting on Wednesday 14 October.
