Cemetery clean-ups start soon
A CLEAN-up of cemeteries across the Cairns region is taking place from 3 November, with works expected to take about a month.

A council spokeswoman said over time, a range of unapproved memorials and prohibited items had been left on graves.
“While often placed with the best of intentions, these items can become dangerous in high winds, create hazards for maintenance staff, block waterways and even cause environmental damage,” she said.
The spokeswoman said as part of the clean-up, the council would be removing prohibited items such as:
Plastic flowers that are damaged and not contained in approved receptacles
Glass and breakable items, including vases, ceramic pots and ornaments
Draped or flying flags
Lights (including solar or battery powered)
Alcohol or alcohol containers (full or empty)
Clothing, jewellery and accessories
Balloons, photo frames, candles or naked flames, windchimes, toys, furniture, statues or other ornaments
Anything with sharp edges, spikes or hooks
Potted plants.
“Families are encouraged to collect any valuable or sentimental items before 3 November, as removed items will not be stored or returned,” the spokeswoman said.
“(The) council will not be removing unauthorised white crosses that are in good condition and adequately secured.”
