The year-long program will start at Fogarty Park on 31 December 2025 with the New Year’s Eve Family Concert, kicking off celebrations that run through to 31 December 2026 with Carols in the Park.

More than 80 events will be held, featuring council-led activities as well as events delivered by community groups and businesses, with additional activities expected to be added throughout the year.

The program spans a diverse range of events, including:

Cairns Museum exhibitions such as ‘Yirraganydji: Saltwater Art’ and ‘Twin Beginnings: First Settlement at Smithfield’

Cultural events, including the 2026 Cairns Chinese New Year celebrations and CARMA Multicultural Festival

Sporting highlights such as the Cairns Airport Ironman, Cairns Marathon and Cairns Taipans home games

Festivals and music events including the Cairns Show, Cairns Ukulele Festival, Cairns Festival and Australian Festival of Chamber Music.

Council said the program provided a platform for local businesses, community groups and organisations, fostering partnerships and civic pride while promoting Cairns’ heritage and achievements.

Amendments and additions to the program will be considered throughout the year to enhance opportunities for residents and visitors.

The celebrations honour Cairns’ history, highlight its present diversity and vibrancy and look ahead to the next 150 years.

Events will showcase cultural festivals, exhibitions, sporting competitions and family-friendly activities, providing residents and visitors with numerous opportunities to participate.

The launch on Wednesday at Cairns Regional Council involved a welcome to Country from Henrietta Marrie, who reminded attendees of the 50,000 years of history the traditional custodians have on the city’s land.

Mayor Amy Eden and Cairns Historical Society president Dr Clive Skarott spoke of the importance and significance of the celebrations. The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting to mark the occasion.
