Carnival fitting end to fiesta
CAIRNS Festival came to a vibrant close on Sunday 7 September, with Carnival on Collins transforming Collins Avenue, the Tanks Arts Centre and Cairns Botanic Gardens into a bustling hub of music, art and family fun.

Despite occasional showers forcing a few last-minute adjustments, large crowds attended the annual Father’s Day tradition, enjoying a full day of entertainment and interactive activities.
Families were treated to a range of attractions, from mini golf, face painting and origami to basket weaving, street science and plant sales, ensuring there was something for all ages.

Highlights on the Flecker Gardens stage included the Miriki Showcase, Junior Burger’s kids’ concert and live sets from Tessa Devine, Savidas and Burger Joint, keeping the atmosphere lively throughout the day.
Adding a dramatic edge to the program was Primal, a provocative circus act inspired by the animal kingdom and produced by Highwire Entertainment.
The show, which only premiered earlier this year, captivated audiences with its daring physicality and creativity.
“To have that recognition and to be invited to a curated festival in such a beautiful part of the world was something we felt really honoured to be a part of,” said Highwire Entertainment producer Elena Kirschbaum.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden praised the event for capturing the essence of the city’s community spirit.
“My absolute favourite event on the program, Carnival on Collins, really anchors Cairns Festival,” she said.
“It’s a relaxed day under the trees, enjoying the beautiful Tanks space, and it wraps up 10 days that have featured more than 60 events right across the city.”
The Esplanade main stage also concluded four nights of live music across the weekend, with performances by Steph Strings, Djawarray with Koahlition, Felipe Baldomir, R.3.B, and Burger Joint, drawing substantial crowds to the Quarter Street precinct.
