Dr Valerie Keenan, part of the steering committee for the precinct, said the meeting was open to everyone, at the Tully Country Club on Tuesday, November 21 at 5.30pm.

“A draft proposal to support the idea has been developed in conjunction with traditional owners, arts and business professionals, practicing artists, teachers, business owners, community members and ratepayers,” she said.

“This inaugural meeting is being held to introduce the idea of a precinct to the broader community and begin a discussion with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council on how to take a project of this calibre forward.

“It is understood that this concept has not been included in CCRC planning, yet but given the amount of interest we have received to date we feel sure that council will want to give it thorough consideration.

“The development and construction of an arts and cultural precinct for Tully in the heart of the town would bring multiple cultural, economic, educational and social benefits to the town and the region.

“It would also enhance liveability and wellbeing within the community.”

Dr Keenan said there was so much talent, history and unique culture practiced for thousands of years by rainforest Aboriginal people but nowhere to express or showcase it.

She said ideally the precinct would include a regional art gallery, a museum, a theatre, gallery shop and workshop, meeting and creative spaces.
