The study found that Cairns placed fourth overall, behind Gold Coast-Tweed Heads, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, at a time when only 55.5% of Queenslanders are sufficiently active, according to Queensland Health.

Net World Sports analysed the latest health data, activity levels, search trends and environmental factors to assess fitness outcomes across the state, revealing, it said, stark differences between regions.

Cairns recorded a total fitness score of 50.2 out of 100, with strong results in long-term health conditions and run clubs and informal fitness search trends. The city ranked particularly well for long-term health conditions, scoring 68.3 out of 100.

The research found that Cairns residents benefit from relatively low rates of long-term health conditions, with only 8.7% affected. Heart disease prevalence was 2.2%, while lung conditions were 1.1%.

The study also showed high levels of physical activity, with 79.3% of Cairns residents meeting exercise guidelines. Dietary habits were also highlighted, with 68.5% consuming adequate fruits and vegetables. Smoking and vaping rates were comparatively low at 16.4% and 3.5%, respectively.

Cairns recorded a diet and exercise interest score of 43.1 out of 100 and a run clubs and informal fitness search trends score of 62.1 out of 100, indicating strong community engagement in both organised and casual physical activity.

Environmental factors were also assessed, with Cairns receiving an environmental enablers score of 16.3 out of 100. The study noted access to gyms, outdoor spaces and informal fitness opportunities as contributing factors to healthy lifestyles in the region.

Net World Sports CEO Alex Loven said staying active did not require expensive facilities or living in a major city.

“You don’t need a fancy gym or a big city to stay active, find little ways to move every day,” he said.

“Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk your dog, do a stretch session in the morning or start easy home workouts. With the right gear, you can build a consistent routine and keep your body moving, no matter where you live.”

The findings are part of Net World Sports’ research into Australia’s fittest cities, available at: https://www.networldsports.com.au/.
