The stickers which read “I ♥ CAIRNS” on a pink background, incorporating the celebrations’ official flower – the native violet – as well as a kookaburra, an ice cream and a butterfly, included a small Cairns 150 logo in the bottom righthand corner.

But the stickers – about 10,000 – have been dumped.

It is understood council chief executive officer Ken Gouldthorp didn’t like them and ordered council officers to remove them from display at council offices and other places throughout the city.

Cr Cathy Zeiger (Div. 3) told the last council meeting she had seen the stickers.

“We did have some stickers presented to us, but they’ve been recalled and are under review,” she said.

At the council meeting, Mayor Amy Eden said she didn’t know the stickers had been recalled.

“I’ve heard such good things and I was trying to find out where I could get some more. So, Mr CEO, are you able to enlighten us on that? Please?”

Mr Gouldthorp (pictured above) said he was “happy to take that question on notice”.

A council spokeswoman later said the CEO’s response would be provided to the Mayor.

She also refused to answer a series of questions from CLN including:

  • Has the CEO replied to the Mayor’s question? If so, what is his response?

  • Why were the stickers withdrawn and from where?

  • How many were printed and at what cost?

  • Are they being replaced, what is the new design, how many will be printed, what is the cost and where will they be distributed?

Cairns Local News has a supply of the stickers at its office at 268b Mulgrave Rd, Westcourt.
