Bus finally makes vital stop
A LONG-awaited new bus stop at Westcourt opens for business on Monday.

The Cairns and District Senior Citizens Association has been campaigning for the bus stop and a route diversion since November 2021 because most of their members relied on bus transport to get to and from their Gatton St hall. It became part of the 2024 state election campaign.
From Monday 29 June, route 133 (Westcourt) will be realigned via Tills, Gatton and Birch streets to service two new accessible bus stops on Gatton Street, about 100m from the senior citizens hall.
The Queensland Government said the change would improve access to bus services for seniors, people with mobility needs and other local passengers, with buses continuing to operate seven days a week.
The new stops form part of a broader update to bus services across Cairns.
Route 122 (Redlynch) will also be realigned from 29 June to service a recently constructed stop on Botanica Drive (stop 750751), providing nearby residents with direct walk-up access to public transport.
Member for Barron River Bree James MP said the changes would benefit local commuters.
“These upgrades will make it easier for Cairns residents to get on the bus closer to home, with services running seven days a week,” she said. “Combined with permanent 50 cent fares, these improvements will boost access for local customers, including seniors and people with mobility needs.
“We are delivering on our commitment to improve public transport for the Cairns community.”
Timetables for both routes will also be updated to better reflect traffic conditions, with some services departing slightly earlier or later than current schedules.
Updated timetables will be available on the Translink website closer to the commencement of the revised services.
The changes are aimed at improving accessibility and convenience for passengers while bringing bus services closer to key community facilities and residential areas across Cairns.
