Tanya Morris has launched Curios and Creatives on Front Street through the ‘RENEW Tropical Douglas’ program, which activates vacant commercial spaces by matching them with emerging businesses and community-focused projects.

Ms Morris said the program gave her the chance to turn a long-held idea into something real.

“I couldn’t have taken a chance on starting this without Renew,” she said.

“It’s given me the opportunity to bring my idea to the table, see if it works and create a space where people can come together, share their creativity and feel connected.”

Curios and Creatives brings together a variety of items and creative opportunities, offering a welcoming drop-in space where community members can sit, chat, make something, or simply enjoy a cup of tea.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the opening was another positive step in revitalising Mossman’s main street.

“Seeing a once-empty shopfront now filled with colour, creativity and energy is exactly what Renew is all about,” she said.

“Spaces like this bring life back into Mossman, support local talent and give people more reasons to visit, connect and spend time in town.”

Ms Morris said the response from locals had already been encouraging.

“Every second person pops their head in to see what’s happening,” she said.

“People want places to gather, create and feel part of something. This is about community as much as it is about art.”
