Bowlers roll for charity
CAIRNS West Bowls Club has raised more than $5500 for COUCH Cancer Hub NQ.

The fundraiser was hatched by club member Terry Mawer over a cup of coffee with another member, Barry Armstrong, who uses the COUCH hub for his rehabilitation program.
“He invited me to come to COUCH and have a look through the facility,” Mr Mawer said.
“After a guided tour and introduction to the staff members we were shown their donation tree, which is a major part of income for the hub,” he said.
“Barry and I readily agreed that we could do a fundraising event at the West Cairns Bowls Club, both being members.
“This idea soon escalated when other members came on board, namely, Dawn Evans and Russel Apps, who both have family that have used the COUCH hub.
“The West Cairns Bowls Club was 100% supportive of this idea and decided to make COUCH our preferred cancer charity.
“Local businesses and trades of the town didn’t hesitate in providing us with cash donations and products to be raffled in our mega draw.
“This was a great success having 64 bowlers made up of tradies, businesses and club bowlers playing two 10-end games of bowls with plenty of prizes to be distributed all around.
“From the club’s point of view, it is very satisfying to be able to donate to a very worthy charity knowing the funds are used locally.
“A meaningful thank you must go out to all club members and staff who were the backbone of this initiative.”
