Book nook by Rotary
A READING nook with dozens of books has opened at The Women’s Centre FNQ.

Layne Gardiner of the Rotary Club of Cairns said the club recently received a ‘People of Post’ grant sponsored by Australia Post.
“The grant required that we support a project focused on our community priorities: literacy, mental health, disaster support or the environment,” he said.
“With that in mind, the club approached The Women’s Centre FNQ with a plan to establish a reading nook for children visiting the centre.
“Our idea was to support inclusive, safe and engaging literacy experiences for children visiting The Women’s Centre FNQ by increasing access to age-appropriate books that reflect diverse needs and backgrounds.
“Rotary members generously contributed their time to purchase and cover all books to ensure durability and long-term use, while the club contributed to the costs of furnishing the Nook, to create a welcoming and comfortable space.
Women’s centre CEO Nicole Dye said the nook would allow children to select books, set their own pace and engage in ways that feel safe.
“These small choices help children rebuild a sense of autonomy over their world, while also supporting cognitive and emotional development,” she said.
