Last month, David Honey was travelling inbound from the Northern Beaches on a Kinetic bus to start his night shift when a group of Canadian tourists became the target of racial abuse from another passenger.

Although off duty, he calmly stepped in to support the visitors, de-escalated the situation and contacted the CitySafe team, who notified police.

But Mr Honey was allegedly assaulted before police intercepted the bus at Tobruk Pool and arrested the passenger without further incident.

Mayor Amy Eden revealed Mr Honey’s professionalism, calm leadership and willingness to step in when it mattered – and thanked him.

“For me, stories like this are a reminder that community safety is not just about uniforms, vehicles or CCTV cameras,” she said. “It’s about people. People willing to look out for others. People willing to step forward. People who genuinely care about our community and the experience visitors have when they come to Cairns.”
